Fall in Love with Panels

What is one of the best ways to love your windows?  I say it’s to flatter them with a chic panel on each side so they hug the window frame almost like a best friend.  I mean who doesn’t love a good hug?

I know it may sound boring, but you just can’t go wrong with panels.  In fact, I liken panels to that little black dress in your closet.  It is your ‘go-to’ when deciding what to wear for date night.  Dress it up or dress it down, it always works.  Panels can soften your room, add a pop of color and still allow plenty of sunshine in during the day.   They are a classic, timeless staple providing the perfect mix of luxury, softness and yes, even an edgier look depending on the fabric you select.

Once you decide to make the move towards panels, the next step will be selecting the drapery design that suits the style of your room and provides the function that you need. Single width panels are an inexpensive way to add color, warmth and dimension; more functional panels, 1 ½ widths or wider, have the option of fully closing to provide added privacy and cozy up a room.

Drapery heading and finished length must also be considered.  No longer does everyone have the standard 2-3 inch rod pocket opening and panels pushed off to the sides.  Yes, we’ve come a long way baby!  Today’s drapery headings include pinch pleat, inverted pleat, flat front and the increasingly popular grommet style.  Although the heading choice is mostly an aesthetic preference, the grommet style does offer greater ease  in opening/closing.  So if this will be done frequently, grommets may be a better option for you.

As to a finished length,  determine where the rod will be mounted on your wall and measure down from there.  I tend to like a clean, simple break at the floor so the panels lay gently.  However, if glam is more your style, you may want to add length so the panels pool into a luxurious puddle.  But beware, this style may entice your dust bunnies to take a little dip.

Now for the fun part, choosing a fabric.  Start by analyzing your room and opt for a fabric that will compliment the colors/textures you’ve already chosen.  Order samples, lay them side by side and see what works well together.  If the panels are your starting point, choose a fabric you fall in love with and build around that. Not only do we have a great selection of fabrics in our Etsy shop , you can also take a peek at some of the drapery designs we have created for customers.

In the end, you want your panels to convey a feeling.  Whether it’s a warm and inviting living area, a soft and whimsical bedroom or a sophisticated and chic dining room, panels have the ability to complete your look.  And what a better way to love your windows!
